Mozilla Firefox, portable edition (formerly known as Portable Firefox and commonly known as Firefox Portable) is a reconditioned version of Mozilla Firefox created by John T. Haller.
It is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10 as well as with Wine on UNIX-based systems. Although recent versions present serious compatibility issues with WinPE XP and BartPE XP, the older version 2.0.0.20 is compatible with Windows 98, Me, and PE XP and 2000.
Differences from Mozilla Firefox
Firefox Portable retains all of Mozilla Firefox's capabilities such as extensions and automatic update. Changes to reduce the number of entries on the USB stick have also been added. The web cache and browser history were previously disabled under version 2.0. Firefox Portable's ability to remove cookies and release history is not enabled by default, pursuant to a licensing agreement with Mozilla.
Personal settings, bookmarks and all extensions and themes installed are stored on the USB stick with Firefox Portable. This allows the user to switch from one computer to another without losing the app's settings. Plugins such as Flash and Shockwave cannot be installed on Firefox Portable in the usual sense, but plugin files can be copied from a local installation to the appropriate portable folder.
Characteristics
- Open-source free software portal
- Launcher - Performs a number of functions, including: adjusting paths to external programs (mime types), adjusting paths to local homepages, intelligently recreating the component register when moving drives, backing up/restore certain registry keys in some cases, cleaning folders and directories in some cases, adjusting some extension setting paths that make extensions non-portable.
- Default Profile - A default profile exists in the Firefox directory with settings to improve portability.
- No default browser verification - Firefox doesn't check if it's the default browser at startup.
- Download Prompts - Firefox will ask where to save downloads.
- No disk cache - The browser disk cache has been disabled to reduce the size of the disk and the number of writings on the disk, which can increase the life of the disk.
- Update Prompts - As the browser update on a USB stick can be very slow, Firefox Portable asks you if you want to update rather than do it automatically.
Problems
- The installation of add-ons and extensions seems to take longer.
- Constant reading/writing on an external USB stick can reduce the life expectancy of the key.
- Multiple profiles are not supported (a feature somewhat hidden in the official Firefox browser); however, PortableApps.com has released the multiple profile support feature for Firefox Portable.
